DAY # 27

EMBRACE MISTAKES.

CHALLENGE BREAKDOWN

Today I will recognize and embrace the fact that mistakes, including overeating, are part of my learning process of creating a healthier relationship with food and my body as well as increasing my awareness and mindfulness!

We all overeat at some point in our lives, some more than others. Your outer experiences are a reflection of your internal condition.  One important philosophy that I have come to understand and share with clients is this:  you are always exactly where you are supposed to be.   If you were supposed to be anywhere else, you absolutely would be.  It’s the order of the Universe.  Everything is exactly as it should be.  We may not like that, but if it was supposed to be different, it would be!  And where you are today is a direct result of your thoughts and feelings from the past, including yesterday.  So you have to get your mind and body on board with where you want to go.  And once you embrace that simple concept and accept the fact that “I am exactly where I am supposed to be”, you can stop judging yourself, your choices, and your mistakes.  You start to accept responsibility.  Then you can start to reframe your thoughts and recognize that your obstacles are actually amazing opportunities for growth and change.

Many people resist change but change is inevitable.  Your body is always changing, your breath is always changing, the universe is always changing, the weather is definitely always changing!  So embrace change.  Change gives you the opportunity to create the life you want.  If you desire weight loss, you have to start acting like and making dietary and lifestyle decisions like a person who eats and lives like the weight you want to be at.  If you want financial freedom, you have to start acting like and making financial decisions like a person who has the wealth you desire.  It’s important to look at things big picture.  Delete the fantasy that you will lose 5 pounds a week.  That’s like saying you will be a millionaire next year.  It’s not that you CAN’T lose 5 pounds a week or become a millionaire next year, it’s just that both of those goals are going to take some SERIOUS hustle and you have to ask yourself “Am I the kind of person who can make that happen?”

The reality is, you absolutely can. And from a mindful perspective, just start making small mindful eating changes, pay attention to your breath, create personal guidelines around eating and stick to them.  And little by little, you will get there.  Think big picture.  Give yourself a good year, yes I said YEAR of practicing mindful eating.  Commit to practicing your mindful eating skill set now.  Use patience and persistence.  Learn from every “failure” - it only teaches you more about yourself and your relationship with food.

During meals and snacks, you goal is to identify your sweet spot  - where you are no longer hungry and you are no longer full. THAT is contentment, your ultimate goal.  If you do overeat, instead of beating yourself up (that never works btw) shift your focus on and try to examine your WHY.  WHY do you do what you do when it comes to food… consider the emotions or triggers that are causing you to overdo it.  Little by little, you will identify more.  Little by little you will make small baby steps.  Then over the course of time, you will look back and think “wow look at that!”  Mindful eating doesn’t happen in 30-days but you can get a great jumpstart on incorporating some key skills.  Don’t give up, it’s the best investment in your emotional, mental and spiritual health!  PS: stop comparing yourself to others and complaining about where you are.  You are where you are supposed to be.  But that doesn’t mean you have to stay there.  Keep practicing mindful eating skills and over time, you will start to create a healthier relationship with both food and you body!
